Conveying Good Will: Conveyor Safety Tips for Industrial Workers

Hi, my name is Brooke, and I used to run the HR department in a factory. I filed a lot of injury reports and helped a tragic number of people make claims for workers' compensation or WorkCover. In many cases, the accidents involved convener belts. By seeing what not to do, I really learned what should be done in terms of conveyor safety. I love writing and wanted to convey some good will to the world through a blog – I also love puns. In this space, I plan to post on conveyor belt safety as well as other posts related to a range of industrial equipment. I hope these posts help to protect you and your workers.

What Are the Benefits of Compressor Overhauls?

by Ceyda Graumans

Compressors work hard, usually on a constant running basis. While these devices are robust and hard-wearing, you still need to take care of them. While preventative maintenance helps you do this, there might be times in a compressor's life when it needs a more formal overhaul.

What happens during compressor overhauls? What are their benefits?

What Is a Compressor Overhaul?

When you have a compressor overhaul, a qualified technician comes out and looks at your device. They might start by asking you how the compressor is working and whether you've spotted any problems. This helps them pinpoint potential areas of concern.

They then strip down the device and run service tests on it. For example, they might run a pressure test to see if the compressor is performing to the right standards. They'll check the oil and fluid samples to evaluate their quality.

During the overhaul, they also clean the inside of the device and its parts. Dirt and dust can prevent a compressor from working to full capacity. They'll look for parts or areas which have problems, such as damage or wear. These parts might need to be repaired, reconditioned or replaced. At the end of the process, they put the compressor back together again and check that it is working.

What Are the Advantages of Compressor Overhauls?

Compressors can keep working even if they start to develop problems. You might not always notice a dip in performance, internal overheating or the signs of a possible future breakdown at this stage.

However, if your compressor isn't in good shape, then its running costs might start to creep up. It will use more energy to produce less effective results. Eventually, it could break down completely, leaving you with a major repair or even full replacement costs. You'll also have downtime costs here if you have to take the device out of commission to fix or replace it.

An overhaul gives you a snapshot picture of the condition of your compressor. Your technician can then clean and repair any immediate problems to get your device back to optimum standards. This is a quick process that doesn't involve much downtime.

Even a simple clean can make a compressor work more efficiently. If you spot and fix small problems early, then they won't turn into major issues later that will cost more to fix. The costs of an overhaul are lower than the costs of major repairs or a new compressor.
